Uber Self-Driving Cars Returning To Pittsburg

Date: Oct 5th, 2018 By SMA Law Group
Categories: Ridesharing Accident, Uber Accident

Due to a self-driving Uber vehicle accident in Arizona earlier this year, Uber had pulled its self-driving cars out of service. That is about to change.

You see, the Arizona accident happened when the driver who was supposed to be monitoring the vehicle’s progress from the inside was distracted by their phone. Unfortunately, the vehicle ended up striking a pedestrian.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company will begin testing its self-driving vehicles on public roads again by the end of 2018.

What does this mean for Pittsburg drivers?

In fact, have we even figured out how to regulate regular ridesharing services?

A New World

Transportation has changed over the last few years. Whereas before you would have thought twice before hopping into someone’s personal vehicle for a ride to the bank or to the grocery store, now many people have the Uber app on their phone.

Regardless of whether they are self-driving or not, we should be asking another question: How safe is Uber?

Before, we could be fairly certain that our public transportation options were safe. We knew that the buses we rode were regularly inspected and maintained and that the drivers were trained. We knew that taxi drivers have many laws and regulations to follow.

But what about Uber drivers?

Becoming a driver with the company is not difficult and there are hardly any vehicle inspections.

What happens if your Uber driver is distracted by their phone like the one in the Arizona crash? Or worse, what if your Uber driver is under the influence of alcohol. An impaired ridesharing driver is a danger to everyone on the roadway, not just their passengers.

Uber has more than 750,000 vehicles on the US roadways and they are adding more and more drivers to their ranks every day. Now, Uber has expanded into food delivery services, taking the place of many delivery drivers.

Who is responsible if they get into an accident while they are transporting someone or someone’s food? What if they are waiting for a fare and get into an accident?

Yes, Uber does have insurance policies that cover accidents their drivers get into, but it only applies to certain situations. Will it be enough to cover your expenses if you are injured because of a negligent Uber driver?

What You Can Do

Getting into a vehicle accident is scary. We know your first priority will be taking care of injuries, but in the aftermath, you may need a Pittsburg Uber accident attorney. Dealing with insurance companies can be a hassle, especially if they do not offer you enough to cover all of your accident-related expenses.
