We have learned that two vehicles were speeding side by side, apparently racing, across the West End Bridge the other night when they caused a fatal accident. Police say that the two cars were coming off of 51 at a “very high rate of speed.” One of the racing vehicles lost control and crashed into other cars in the area.
One person has been confirmed dead and one is in critical condition. Three other people were injured, but their condition is not known.
At the SMA Law Group, we do not enjoy bringing you stories of tragedy. We do so because we want to highlight just how dangerous and unexpected the conditions on the roadway can change. When you need a Pittsburgh car accident attorney, call us today.
What Can Happen?
While we know that most people do not typically get caught up in street racing incidents, the story really does show that there are irresponsible drivers who cause others harm. Negligent drivers are on the road on a daily basis. For the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, we know there were more than 128,000 crashes reported.
Not all accident result in major injuries, but many do. It is not uncommon for us to represent car crash victims who have one or more of the following injuries:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
- And more
We want to point out that any injury that requires a visit to the emergency room can cost a tremendous amount of money. For the injuries above, the costs can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially if long-term rehabilitation is necessary for a person to recover.
What many people do not consider are the hidden costs associated with these crashes. This can include loss of income if a victim cannot work as well as pain and suffering damages.
The Pennsylvania DOT tells us that some of the main causes of crashes are:
- Caused by alcohol
- Distracted drivers
- Following too closely
- Drowsy drivers
When another driver is the reason for your accident, they need to be held accountable. Often, though, their insurance company will give you a hard time when it comes to a settlement.
