We are bringing you a story today that, thankfully, had no personal injuries. Rather, we think it highlights some of the dangers that people in and around our area face each day when they are riding in their vehicles.
Last week, a car was traveling down Saw Mill Run Boulevard in the early morning hours when it crossed the centerline, hit a utility pole, then continued out of control until it smashed into three parked vehicles at an auto sales lot. The driver abandoned their vehicle and fled the scene and police are still searching for the suspect.
Had this happened during the daylight hours, other vehicles and passengers on the street would have been affected and anyone in the auto lot would have been in danger. We do not know what caused this accident to happen, but we would not be surprised to find that alcohol was involved.

The Alcohol Factor
Maybe we have become numb to the dangers that alcohol poses to drivers and anyone on or near the roadway. In Pennsylvania last year, the amount of alcohol-related crashes actually increased from the year before to 10,346. Out of those:
- 293 people were killed
- 6,565 people were injured
We know that police work hard to keep drunk drivers off the road, but thousands of people still make the choice to drive after they have had too much to drink. Those drivers should be held accountable when they cause harm to others.
Overall, Pennsylvania had 128,188 vehicle crashes last year.
- 1,137 fatalities
- 80,612 injuries
Aside from alcohol-related crashes, the main causes of vehicle accidents still revolve around preventable driver errors. Speeding remains the top cause of injury crashes in the state.
We also know that distracted driving is a major cause for concern. It seems that as technology increases our connectedness with the world, it becomes harder to turn off when we are behind the wheel. All too often, drivers think it is more important to check their text messages or watch a video instead of paying attention to the roadway.
Injuries from vehicle accidents range from minor to major, but almost all of them cost us in some way. Medical bills can get out of hand quickly if there is no acceptable insurance settlement.
