Everybody that lives in and around Pittsburgh has to tackle the tunnels at some point. The Fort Pitt, Liberty, and Squirrel Hill Tunnels are some of the most congested and potentially hazardous sections of roadway in our area. At the SMA Law Group, our Pittsburgh auto accident lawyers want to discuss traffic crashes and these tunnels and what you can do to avoid accidents.
Tunnel safety is a serious concern
Most people know that the Fort Pitt, Squirrel Hill, and Liberty Tunnels are highly traveled, but they may not realize that they average around 220,000 drivers a day. That is plenty of traffic, and it can lead to serious accidents. A recent incident was recounted in a local news story.
“I saw a car spinning and coming towards us,” said Luke Watson. He was driving to Bethel Park through the Liberty Tube recently when he saw a car in his rearview mirror. The vehicle was honking its horn. Before he had a chance to process what was happening, he was struck by the vehicle.
Watson says they hit the wall and flipped, with his vehicle landing on its side. Inside the car with him were his wife, son, and new puppy. Thankfully, they all escaped unscathed. Of the incident, police said that a vehicle tried to make a lane change inside the tunnel, clipped one vehicle, swerved into another lane, and struck another vehicle (Watson’s).
Tunnel lane changes are a major problem, according to Pennsylvania State Trooper Melinda Bondarenka. She says that during her time patrolling the tunnels, she regularly ticketed drivers who changed lanes in front of her.
Of course, car crashes can happen anywhere. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were more than 128,000 total crashes reported to the DOT during the latest reporting year. Out of those incidents, there were 1,137 fatalities and more than 80,000 injuries across the state.
Car accidents are largely preventable. Driver error is to blame for most incidents, though this can be due to numerous causes, including:
- Distracted driving
- A failure to follow traffic laws
- Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs
Studies show that approximately 90% of all traffic accidents are caused at least in part by human error. Even as technology strives to increase driver and passenger safety, we must do what we can to remain vigilant on the roadways.
