Drivers in and around Pittsburgh know that this area can be a precarious place to operate a vehicle. While you do what you can to drive safely, there is no way to predict all accidents that could happen. A recent crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that left several people dead and injured nearly 60 people shows how unpredictable our roadways can be. The Pittsburgh truck crash lawyers at the SMA Law Group want to discuss this case and how it highlights the dangers of heavier vehicles.
This recent crash was horrific
Many area residents are used to hearing about serious crashes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. However, a recent crash that involved a tour bus, three tractor-trailers, and a car was worse than any accident we have had lately.
According to Pennsylvania law enforcement sources, a tour bus was driving on a downhill grade when it was unable to negotiate a corner. The bus then went up an embankment, rolled over, and was then struck by two tractor-trailers. A third tractor-trailer then hit the first two, which is when a car also became involved in the crash.
Various agencies are involved in the investigation, including the National Transportation Safety Board. In total, five people died. This includes the driver of the bus and two bus passengers as well as two UPS drivers in one of the tractor-trailers. Approximately 60 people were injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment.
Heavy vehicles pose a danger in accidents
Passenger buses and large commercial trucks are incredibly dangerous when they are involved in accidents. Buses and trucks can weigh tens of thousands of pounds. When they collide, particularly with one another, there are likely to be serious injuries and fatalities.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, we know that there were 7,336 total truck crashes involving heavy vehicles during the latest reporting year. When truck or bus crashes occur, it is not uncommon for the following injuries to occur:
- Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
- Head injuries and traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
Victims of these crashes often require extensive medical care, which can lead to major medical bills. If a victim is unable to work while they recover, they may struggle to support themselves and their families.
