Anytime you hear about an accident involving a train or a tractor-trailer, you can expect that there will be significant damage and possibly serious injuries. A recent crash in Pennsylvania involved both of those vehicles. At SMT Legal, our Pittsburgh truck crash attorneys are here to help if you or someone you love has been injured in an accident. Here, we want to discuss this recent case to highlight how a truck driver’s negligence could lead to serious injuries.

These Incidents Can Be Deadly

A recent crash in Blawnox caught our attention because it involved both the train and a tractor-trailer. The incident occurred on February 11, when witnesses say that the driver of the tractor-trailer backed across the tracks on Center Avenue while attempting to turn down a street on the other side. Witnesses say that when the driver could not make the turn, he decided to drive back across the tracks.

However, the arms came down from the track and the train was fast approaching. The tractor-trailer driver attempted to get the cab off the tracks but was unable to do so before the train sheared off the back of the trailer and downed power lines. The truck had 47,000 pounds of steel on it, and the force of the crash took out a nearby vehicle, which flipped into the air and into a nearby structure of buildings.

Thankfully, nobody was injured in this incident, but it could have been much worse.

Large Truck Accidents Can Be Devastating

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is responsible for regulating large commercial trucks and their drivers. They say that there were more than 4,700 deaths and over 148,000 injuries due to large truck crashes in the latest reporting year across the country. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, there were 7,336 total heavy truck crashes during the latest reporting year, which marks a significant increase over the previous year.

In many cases, like the truck crash above, driver error is to blame (commonly due to traffic violations). All large truck drivers should be responsible and fully trained to operate these vehicles. They should never operate while distracted or under the influence of alcohol drugs. Trucking companies should regularly inspect each vehicle to ensure they are safe for the roadway.
