Labor Day Is Almost Here – Be Sure To Stay Safe

The summer is drawing to a close. The kids are back to school and the temperatures, thankfully, will start to go down a bit. Many people are planning one last hurrah this summer. Labor Day is a time to celebrate the success of another summer gone by, but at SMT Legal, our Pittsburgh, PA, personal injury lawyers want to provide some safety reminders. Nothing is more important than keeping you and your family safe, so take a quick look before finalizing your Labor Day plans.

Planning a road trip?

If you are hitting the roadways for a trip, whether in Pennsylvania or out of state, remember to drive safely. The Labor Day holiday is a busy weekend on the roadways, and there will be plenty of traffic. One news report says that Labor Day sees approximately 308 roadway fatalities and thousands of injuries each year across the US. Driver after a good night’s sleep and plan your stops ahead of time. Keep an emergency safety kit in the vehicle and do not drink and drive.

Be safe around the water

Many Labor Day festivities revolve around the water. This can be a great way to stay cool, but the water also has dangers. Monitor young children around pools, lakes, and rivers. If you are on a boat or jet ski, make sure everyone has a personal flotation device. Keep a first aid kit nearby at all times. Make sure you know and understand Pennsylvania’s boating laws.

Cook safely

If you are lighting up the grill for Labor Day, make sure you handle and cook all food properly. Always have a meat thermometer handy to ensure your food is cooked all the way through. Food poisoning is no joke and can lead to a hospital visit.

It is still hot out

It is still hot out there. In fact, this has been a summer of heat. You and your loved ones need to stay properly hydrated at all times. If you are heading out into the direct sunlight, use sunscreen to prevent sunburns.

Are you using fireworks?

Many people love fireworks on Labor Day. You need to check the laws for whatever jurisdiction you are in because shooting them off may be illegal. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that fireworks sent over 9,000 people to the hospital during the latest reporting year.

Watch the alcohol use

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks on Labor Day. However, alcohol affects everything else we do. If you are drinking, make sure you are not driving. Have a designated driver or plan to take a rideshare home. You should never operate a boat while impaired. If you are in the heat, keep the alcohol to a minimum, and follow every drink with a glass of water.
