How Much More Terrifying Could It Be For Parents?

We could not imagine too many things more terrifying than a parent getting a phone call saying their child has been in a school bus accident. We trust these buses and their drivers with the lives most precious to us.

The other day, parents near Pittsburgh experienced that fear when a school bus overturned in Butler County, overturned and went down an embankment.

  • 6 students were transported to local hospitals by ambulance.
  • 22 students were transported to the hospital by bus.
  • 12 students went home with their parents.

This school bus accident was caused when the bus was traveling through a construction zone. The right side of the bus clipped the end of a concrete barrier. The driver then lost control, hit the guardrail, and went over the embankment.

Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured or killed in this accident, but that is not always the case when things like this happen.

The Numbers

The good news is that the total number of school bus crashes decreased in the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania. But they are also not the only type of bus on the roadway.

Besides school buses, we commonly see these around Pittsburgh on a daily basis: PAT local transport buses, long-distance transportation buses (Greyhound, Megabus, and Fullington Trailways all connect the city with other places), airport transportation services, etc.

While these buses are generally safe, there are times when someone else’s negligence can cause you or a loved one harm.

There could be times when a driver is not properly trained to operate the vehicle they are driving. There are also times when drivers make the choice to operate while distracted by their phones, devices, or other objects. This can lead to them taking their eyes off the road and crashing.

Bus companies and agencies need to regularly inspect and maintain their vehicles so that they can prevent any vehicle failure. If there is brake failure, tire or wheel failure, or a powertrain failure with a bus, the driver can lose control of the vehicle.

The Injuries

A bus crash has the potential to be a mass casualty event. Most of the time, passengers on the bus are not restrained with seatbelts. Also, buses weigh tens of thousands of pounds. When they slam into other vehicles, the resulting injuries can be devastating.
