Distractions Play A Role In Pedestrian Deaths

We need to have a conversation about pedestrian deaths, but first we have to get everyone’s attention. We say that because it is hard to get people to look up from their phones. When you go out, how often do you see people looking down at their phones, regardless of what they are doing? Driving, walking, riding a bike, it does not matter.

We are all attached to our phones and it is killing people.

At SMT Legal, we know that pedestrians face more risks in and around the roadway than anyone else. Our knowledgeable and experienced team will work with you if you have been injured due to another person’s negligence. When you need a Pittsburgh crosswalk accident attorney, we will work to secure the compensation you deserve.

So Much Distraction

A recent article from the Post-Gazette points out that pedestrian deaths are on the rise nationwide. In fact, they are at their highest point in nearly 30 years.

  • More than 6,200 people died in pedestrian crashes in the US in 2018
  • That is a 50% increase from 2009

The article points out that both pedestrians and drivers share some of the blame, and these crashes often involve someone being distracted by a smartphone. As the use of smartphones because more prevalent, so did pedestrian accident deaths.

More than one-third of pedestrian fatalities happen on local streets throughout the country. For the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, there were:

  • 4,106 pedestrian crash injuries
  • 150 pedestrian crash fatalities

In nearly every pedestrian crash, there was an injury or fatality. When a pedestrian is struck by a heavy vehicle, they have no protection. It is common to see the following injuries in pedestrian crash victims:

  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries and possible paralysis
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Severe lacerations or amputations

Treatment for these injuries can become very expensive, especially if the victim needs long-term rehabilitation. Other hidden costs of crashes include things like lost income if a person (or their family caregivers) cannot work as well as pain and suffering damages. When an insurance company is trying to settle a case, their goal is to pay as little as possible.

Do you think they want to take hidden costs into account? Do you know where to turn to ensure that you are getting the full amount of compensation you deserve?
