Dangers of Bicycle Riders

Riding a bike is a great alternative mode of transportation if you live close enough to work. You can avoid using your car which saves you money on car repair as well as gas every week. Biking also helps your overall health. It can help keep your heart healthy all while helping clear pollution by adding one less vehicle to the road. Riding a bike should be fun and some cities are starting to embrace this option more. However, just because states are doing their best to promote cycling or providing bike lanes, does not mean that vehicle drivers are treating cyclists with the respect they deserve on the road.

In The Books

In the legal world, riding a bicycle demands the same respect as driving any other vehicle. It is stated in Pennsylvania law that “every person riding pedal cycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle by this title….” This means that a bicycle accident is treated just as seriously as a car accident. In fact, if you own a car and ride a bicycle then you are covered by your own car insurance. If the person who hits you has car insurance then their insurance should kick in for the accident too. If you do not own a car you can still purchase a kind of car insurance specifically for bike riding. Many people don’t know that and they leave their accident thinking there is nothing the driver who caused the accident can do.

Another law to keep in mind is that if a car were to open its door and hit you while you are on your bike, it is never your fault. It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that it is reasonably safe to open the door before opening it. If you were hit by a door and suffered an injury then the law is on your side despite whatever altercation was made between you and the driver.

Lack Of Respect

It was reported that a man riding his bicycle was nearly hit by an SUV as the SUV made a sharp turn in front of the cyclist almost hitting him and causing a fatal accident. The cyclist followed the SUV to take down his license plate when the driver of the SUV threatened to harm the bicyclist with a gun he had holstered on his side. This is just an example of how little respect bicyclists get and how dangerous it can be when trying to confront drivers for their negligence.
