Bicycle Accident Kills 9th Grader

Category: Bicycle Accident

We are bringing you a story today from the other side of the state, an incident that happened in Warrington. There, a 9th grade boy was killed while he was out riding his bicycle with his friends.

Joey Edwards was struck by the vehicle that Herbert Norton, 51, was driving. Norton says that he saw reflectors on the right side of the road and moved his car to the left. Unfortunately, that was where Joey was.

The story gets even more confusing because we have now learned that Norton was charged with DUI, but that the DUI did not contribute to the accident. He had THC in his system, so under state law, he was charged.

While we await the outcome of this case, we know those bicycle accidents are too common and that they almost always result in injury or death.

The Statistics

We know that many people in and around Pittsburgh enjoy getting out on their bikes. Some people enjoy riding for exercise and fresh air while others use their bikes as their main mode of transportation. Unfortunately, no matter how many steps you take to stay safe when you ride, you cannot control the actions of those around you.

For the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, there were 1,141 bicycle accidents. That number has been fairly consistent over the last five years. Unfortunately, the number of fatalities jumped significantly. The most vulnerable group to injuries and fatalities in bicycle accidents are those in the 5 to 14-year-old range.

Driver negligence is often the cause of bicycle accidents. We often see these accidents happen because drivers ignore or do not see bicycle right-of-ways. We also know that distracted and impaired drivers pose significant dangers to bicycle riders.

The Injuries

Injuries from bicycle accidents can be devastating. Cyclists have no protection from the force of a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds. Even if a rider is wearing a helmet, many injuries are not preventable in some cases. We commonly see the following as a result of bicycle accidents:

All of these injuries require emergency medical treatment that can become very costly, especially if surgery and rehabilitation are necessary.
