We know that the last thing you ever expect when you are on foot around the roadway is that a negligent driver will cause you harm. However, we know pedestrian crashes regularly occur and, far too often, the driver gets away. Today, we want to discuss a recent hit-and-run case that has led to an arrest. We also want to discuss the frequency of pedestrian crashes in relation to other types of car crashes.
At the SMA Law Group, we are ready to help you get the compensation you need if you have been injured. Our car accident attorney in Pittsburgh will be by your side.
What Happened In This Case?
We recently learned that Allegheny County police have arrested a man after a fatal hit-and-run crash in Penn Hills. The crash happened in April when a man slammed into and dragged a pedestrian more than half a mile down the roadway. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle and the man died from his injuries.
After an extensive investigation, police were able to locate the vehicle in a housing complex. The person who owned it attempted to obstruct the police investigation, but it was determined that she allowed her boyfriend, Surron Burch, to drive it on the night of the crash. Police located Burch and charged him with involuntary manslaughter and several other charges related to the death.
What Can Happen?
During the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, there were more than 128,000 vehicle crashes. As a result of these incidents, there were:
- 1,137 crash fatalities
- 80,612 crash injuries
These incidents affect more than just other passenger vehicle drivers and passengers. Also affected are:
- Motorcyclists – 3,052 injuries and 185 fatalities
- Pedestrians – 4,106 injuries and 150 fatalities
- Bicyclists – 1,127 injuries and 21 fatalities
It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries after a vehicle crash of any kind:
- Broken and dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations
- Internal organ damage
- Internal bleeding
- Spinal cord injuries
- Whiplash injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
Treatment for these injuries is often extensive. We find that victims are sometimes temporarily or permanently disabled. Vehicle crash victims who are unable to work and earn an income can see their lives and the lives of their families completely changed. They are left saddled with massive expenses that they have no way to pay without fair insurance settlements.
