We are learning that there was an explosion with fire and injuries at an energy facility in Washington County last week. What we know so far is that four people who work at MarkWest in Washington were airlifted to the hospital due to burn injuries.
The incident occurred due to a fire in a tank holding liquid ethylene glycol plus hydrocarbons, a dangerous material when not stored properly. A statement from MarkWest said this was “an incident near two temporary tanks that were on-site for routine maintenance, resulting in a fire.”
We know that this incident will be under investigation by both fire officials and workplace safety inspectors. While that is happening, we want to point out that gas explosions and other premises injuries are not uncommon in and around Pittsburgh. Do you know where to turn if you are injured on another person’s property, whether at a workplace or other area?
When you need a Pittsburgh premises liability attorney, you can count on the SMA Law Group to be by your side, fighting to secure the compensation you deserve.
In The Workplace
While we know that workers’ compensation insurance should cover all injuries that happen while a person is performing their duties, there are times when claims are denied or a person is fired for reporting an injury. A premises liability claim is one way to secure compensation for a work injury if this happens.
Parking Lots and Inside Stores
Many people do not consider parking lost when they think about injuries, but that is where many of these cases arise. Parking lots are often neglected by property owners. Often, the stores that use the parking lots are not the actual parking lot owners, so they leave it to someone else to fix. That is unfortunate because patrons go through the parking lot twice when they visit an establishment.
A fall onto a paved parking lot can cause major injuries. This is an even bigger problem for the elderly because over 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falling.
Inside a store, we have a whole different set of hazards. Anywhere you have a right to be should be a safe place, free from anything that can cause you harm.
- Store shelving and displays should all be well maintained.
- The entire premises should be regularly inspected and maintained.
- Any chemicals should be used and stored appropriately.
- All floors should be clear and dry, with no obstacles in the way that could cause a person to slip and fall.
We know that restaurant employees need to be vigilant when it comes to spills because they happen often. We also know that broken or chipped glass can cause patrons harm, as could hot plates that can easily cause burns.
It is absolutely vital that kitchen staff and cooks properly store and prepare foods. Failing to do so can cause food poisoning.
